We have finally rolled out a pan-european product supply service for body shops and coachworks, and we already supply clients in Spain, UK, Germany, France, Holland and Portugal.

The service is so easy for body shops to implement, as they already have the staff, equipment, tools and expertise to offer the service, they just need COLORCARE to provide the colour matching service and the mixed top coats and base coats. We provide everything the body shop will need to complete the job. Our ‘body shop’ kits include; Leather Prep, Base Coat, Colour matched Top Coat, crosslinker (binding agent) and full step-by-step instructions. We even offer clients a free half day training course with their first purchase.

For those clients who really want to take the service on in a big way we can supply them with a full kit and colour scanner and intensive 5 day training courses.

Where do you look when you need leather repairing?

Yellow Pages, Google, Local Paper?

This is something we would absolutely love to know! We spend far too much money on advertising that simply does’nt offer the return.

What we found is that there is still a huge percentage of the public that have never heard of, or seen leather repair carried out. Whilst almost every single sofa store or car salesman has a leather repair company on speed dial, the industry seems to be a well-kept secret in Europe.

The internet seems to be the preferred choice for leather-repair savvy punters, but we would like to throw it open to our clients to see what the general concensus is. If people knew quiet how much can be saved by using a leather repair service rather than upholstery or repalcement, then the industry would not be secret for very long.

Why do you buy leather as opposed to fabric?

97% of people say the buy leather because its more durable...

This is very true… as long as you know how to maintain it!

I was talking to a client last week and it was the first time in years that I have met a client who maintained her leather sofa! (we were there for pet damage!).

This client vacuumed under her sofa cushions each week, cleaned teh leather every 2-3 weeks with a suitable cleaner and conditioned it every other month! Now i was sceptical, as we see some sights on a daily basis, but when she told me this sofa was 15 years old, i was gob-smacked! it looked no more than 2 years old (maybe the design/style would of given it away if i’d looked harder, as it was a little dated).

Anyway, the point I am trying to make is that this is 1 client of approx 4000-5000 in the last 4-5 years, who actually maintains their investment! Yes, thats right, you pay more money for leather because you are investing in something that should last longer than cloth/fabric.

If you could maintain your sofa, or car upholstery in 15 minutes per week, would that be something you would be interested in?… Of course it would.

A friend of ours in the USA (Chris Repp – leatherhelp.com) put us on to this style of working, and its certainly not something that most companies do during a recession!

Basically Chris’s method is 100% honesty and helping your clients even if there is no sale in it for you! That’s right! Chirs runs a successful Leather Repair business in the USA, the same as us, and he will visit a clients home/site and evaluate a job – then tell the client if they don’t really need his help! It sounds crazy, but when you boil it down, there is so much competition in every area of industry, so it’s what you do differently that makes you stand out. Chris may not get that little job, but the client will tell 10 times more people about him because of his honesty and undoubtedly he will pick up more work because of it.

After thinking about this for many hours we decided that we needed to bring this forward-thinking-attitude to Europe, but wasnt sure how clients could “do it themselves” rather than employing a technican to repair their leather. Eventually we decided that we needed to expand our DIY kit offering to cover almost every type of leather repair we come across. This way everyone has the option to repair their own leather, depending on skill level and enthusiasm.

It is very true that at least half of the work we come across could be solved with a DIY option and someone with a slice of common sense. We have written a full detailed step-by-step instruction guide with pictures to assist anyone that would like to try this, and we run training courses for upholsterers, auto repair technicians, detailers/valeters, and anyone else who would like to offer this service within their business.

BRAND NEW DIY LEATHER REPAIR KITS FROM COLORCARE

These are not your usual pre-matched ‘liquid’ leather repair kits! These are exactly the same as what we use – professional quality product adapted to be used as a rub on product.

After thousands of emails and phone calls, we have finally developed a tried and tested “DIY LEATHER REPAIR KIT” that stands up to professional critique.

These kits are the exact same product that we use everyday, the coatings have been tested to simulate a man of 150kgs getting in and out of a sports car seat 60,000 times over a 4 day period, with ZERO PERCENT FAILURE!

We have prepared several kits to suit various projects, ranging from a straight forward Black Steering Wheel refinishing kit to a Full Lounge suite.

We have deliberately stayed away from the “We have over 10,000 colours in our database” type set, as quite simply it is complete rubbish! These types of kits don’t account for differences in manufacturers batches, ageing, sun damage, and so on. We have invested tens of thousands of pounds in developing the most advanced leather colour matching system in the world. We can match colour so precisely that any discrepancy is undetectable to the human eye (a match of less than 0.5 DELTA E). This way YOU get the colour that YOU require, not something close to what YOU need – WE supply the kit when “Close enough” isn’t good enough!

How it works – All you need to do is send us a 2cm x 2cm (bigger if possible) square of the leather that you require matching to and we will prepare the kit to your requirements. Our kits are inclusive of shipping within Europe (other destinations will incur a postage fee).
On 99% of cars and sofas you will be able to easily cut a 2cm x 2cm piece of leather from the under side of the item:

CAR – The rear seat base comes out on most modern cars without the need of tools. Once you have the base out, turn it over and you will see at least 6cms of overlap on the edges. Simply trim the piece you need, but make sure you don’t cut away any of the fixings.

SOFA – Turn your sofa or chair onto its back. Using a flat screw driver or staple remover, take out 3-4 staples that hold the back cloth to the frame. You will see 5cms+ of leather tacked onto the frame, simply trim off the piece you need and reattach the backing cloth to the frame.

Then wait for your kit to arrive, along with detailed instructions on how to repair your leather.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IF YOU HAVE 2-TONE LEATHER

As promised last week, we have managed to bring you a guest spot blog entry from the founder of www.LEATHERHELP.com, Mr. Chris Repp.  We have spent the last few months getting to know Chris and his vision for the leather industry and we are very proud to be able to bring you content from such an experienced leather aficionado.   We hope Chris will give us some more of his time in the near future and that we can continue to bring you articles from leather experts of the same calibre.

In the bullets below I will give you a number of important reasons you should know if you have base-print or two-tone leather.  But first here is an introduction to the subject.

        Look closely at your leather.  Does it have different shades in the finish?  Does it have high spots and low spots that give it an antiqued or distressed look?  If so you have a specially finished leather. It goes by many industry names such as base-print, two-tone, antiqued or molted leather.  Whatever you call it, there are a few things you should know if you are considering buying or own this type of leather.

  • This leather finish is made by applying 2 distinct layers of finish to a tanned leather surface.  The first is usually sprayed on the entire hide and is called the base coat.  The second can be sprayed, rolled, hand-rubbed or brushed on top of the base coat and is called the print coat.
  • The base coat is opaque and covers color variations in the hide to give one solid color to the leather.  The print coat is a tinted transparent color that gives depth, sheen and protection to the base coat and to the leather.
  • All that to say, base-print is a beautiful looking leather finish that adds character to your leather furniture.
  • The multi-tone nature of the finish will tend to hide some stains better than a leather that is finished in all one color.
  • But a few warnings
    • Some manufacturers have had some problems with the adhesion of the print color to the base color.  When you get your leather, (or if you can sneak and do this in the showroom even better) use a safe leather cleaner to wipe a back or side area of the leather.  If the rag shows a bit of purple color, that color is the print coat. 
    • Even with a good base-print, be careful to use safe cleaners on your base-print leather.  A strong cleaner will remove the print coat and the base color alone will stand out sorely
    • .Scratches to this leather will show up lighter because you see the hide or the base coat showing through the print coat.

Don’t despair if you do take the print coat off of your leather, it can be restored.  But especially for this job, hire an experienced professional.  Base-print work is a more challenging technique and needs the touch of an experienced leather professional


Rogue leather repair companies

It's nice to have such poor competition!

Carrying on from my previous blog about the leather repair industry “good service/bad service”, I would like to share some photos of a Mercedes-Benz CLK that we were asked to refinish this week, in Marbella on the Costa del Sol.

The owner had bought the car in good faith from a ‘reputable’ care dealer on the coast only several months ago.  The car was a couple of years old so he expected a few knocks and scrapes, but the interior on this car looked in good condition (at first glance).  However, after a couple of months the seats began to crack and peel away, revealing a totally different shade of grey.  Upon closer inspection the owner found that not only had the seats been refinished, but also the entire dashboard, centre console, front door cards, etc… 

What happened was that the company that the ‘reputable’ car dealer used was not able to match the colour of the seats correctly, so they mixed the colour as close as they could and decided to spray EVERYTHING in sight to hide their inability to match colour properly!

When we looked at the car closely we could see that the back door trim had be left original and blended in to the front to trick the eye.  The steering wheel had been sprayed in the wrong colour too; all in the entire car was a mess.  We had to complete strip back the old colour, rescan the correct colour and refinish the entire car for them.

It pays to play attention to the little details when buying a second hand car.  You wouldn’t necessarily think about the interior of your car being painted, but it happens, so be aware and check the car front to back, top to bottom.  Discreetly scratch the leather lightly with your finger nail to see if the coating moves or comes away.  If you want help, just call us and we will be glad to assist.

COLORCARE Madrid

The official launch date is yet to be announced, but we are opening a central repair centre in the spanish capital, Madrid.  With the growing success of our contract warranty repair business we have decided to expand the operation by opening a fully fitted repair centre, which will handle all of the larger warranty repair work, as well as being equipped to handle full sofa refinishing work and automotive interiors.  We will have a custom built ramp for the auto interior work and have already had much interest from some of the most prestigious car dealers in Spain.

My sporadic leather repair blog!

This isn’t really a blog entry, but more of an apology for my infrequent entries!  As much as i love to share my knowledge and experiences with other technicians and leather aficionados, sometimes trying to balance running a full time business (by full time i mean 15 hours a day! :) and writing a blog isn’t easy.  COLORCARE will be attempting to secure some guest spot blogs from some of the most respected leather technicians and companies in the world.  Watch this space!

However, i will attempt to bring some more regularity into my blog posting and share the odd funny story as well!  Who know’s maybe I can convince Chris Repp from leatherhelp.com to become a ‘full-time’ guest writer on here!
