Types of Leather

Without being overly technical we have written this for you to be able to assess your items and decide which type of leather you have and be able to choose the correct products and be sure of their use.

In the main most of you will find that you have a ‘protected’ leather, which is what is used on most sofas, chairs, car interiors, etc, because it is durable, hard wearing and resilient to stains. Key indicators to identifying ‘protected’ leather is to lightly scratch the surface. If it doesn’t leave a mark then it is almost certainly classed as a ‘protected’ leather.

If it does leave a mark then it is likely that you have an Aniline or Semi-Aniline leather, which can have a porous surface, so is not always suitable for some leather care products.

Nubuck & Suede are easily identified, as they have a ‘nap’, very similar to a snooker table. These leather types are easily stained and it is very important to use only the correct care products on these.

There are other types that you may come across, such as bi-cast and vinyl, but these can be cared for using the ‘protected’ range of products.
